Bond University Master of International Relations / Master of International Relations (Professional): application checkpoints before you choose an adviser

Both Bond international relations masters accept a recognised bachelor degree in global studies, social sciences, society and culture, or business and management.

Bond University offers two international relations masters: the Master of International Relations and the Master of International Relations (Professional). Both are coursework degrees, and both ask for the same academic background and English scores. They differ in length and credit structure. The checkpoints below let you compare your own situation against the entry conditions before you talk to any adviser.

Know which program you are applying for

Bond lists the two programs under separate codes and separate CRICOS registrations, so an application, offer or quote should name one of them exactly.

  • Master of International Relations: program code HS-23097, CRICOS 078661G.
  • Master of International Relations (Professional): program code HS-23078, CRICOS 063306E.

Both are classed as Masters Degree (Coursework) and sit in the study area of International Relations, Politics, and Arts.

Check the length and credit structure

The shorter program runs 1 year, which Bond describes as 3 semesters. It totals 120 credit points, and all of them are compulsory subjects. Bond’s description of it emphasises finishing a postgraduate degree in one year.

The Professional program is listed at 92 weeks. It totals 165 credit points: 145 compulsory credit points plus 20 elective credit points, which Bond presents as a way to tailor the degree. Its key features include tailoring studies to your professional and career interests and gaining practical work experience.

Because the credit loads differ, ask any adviser which of the two they are describing when they quote a timeline.

Check your bachelor degree against the field list

Both programs require successful completion of a recognised Bachelor degree, or an equivalent qualification, in one of these fields:

  • global studies
  • social sciences
  • society and culture
  • business and management

Compare your own major with this list first. A degree outside these fields needs a clear answer before you pay for any application service.

Check the rule for China and Taiwan

For applicants from China, Bond lists a recognised 4-year Bachelor degree equivalent to an Australian Bachelor degree. Applicants from Taiwan have the same listed qualification. The field requirement above applies on top of that in both cases.

Both programs use identical wording for these two regions, so one set of documents answers the question for either program.

Check your English test scores

Bond’s English requirement is the same for both programs. These are the scores listed for the first two tests:

  • IELTS Academic: overall 6.5, with no sub-score below 6.0.
  • PTE Academic: overall 58, with no Communicative Scores below 50.

Bond also lists TOEFL iBT as an accepted test. Compare each score line by line, because a single sub-score under the minimum is a separate gap from the overall score.

Questions to put to an adviser

These questions follow from the facts above, and a good answer will use the same program names and codes:

  1. Which of the two programs, by name and CRICOS code, are you preparing my application for?
  2. Which field on Bond’s list does my bachelor degree fall under?
  3. How does my 4-year degree from China or Taiwan match the listed qualification?
  4. Do my English scores meet both the overall and the sub-score minimums?
  5. Do you mean 1 year or 92 weeks when you quote my study period?

An adviser who cannot answer these against the program details above is working from something other than Bond’s published conditions.
